Health Certificates and Coggins Testing
Health Certificates
If you are planning to
travel out of state, contact CVS to schedule an appointment
for a health exam, to have blood drawn for a coggins test,
and to acquire information for the health certificate. Most
states require proof of a negative coggins test as well as a
health certificate to enter their state. When the coggins
test is determined negative, we will issue the health
certificate with the accurate information. The certificate
verifies that the doctor has examined your horse and deems
that your horse was healthy and free from obvious infectious
diseases at the time of the exam. The health certificate is
valid for 30 days from the date of the health inspection.
Please know that if you are stopped without the
appropriate paper work, you could be fined and/or your horse
quarantined until a vet can get a coggins test run and a
health certificate written. Traveling without proper paper
work can be very expensive, so please plan ahead.
Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA) Coggins Testing
At this time, there is no cure or vaccine to prevent Equine
Infectious Anemia. EIA is a serious viral disease that has
become a world wide threat. If a horse tests positive a
second test is performed. The USDA requires a positive horse
to be quarantined or euthanized. This viral disease is
similar to AIDS in humans. It affects the horse’s immune
system, which leads to secondary infections that may cause
death.
Testing is required for interstate travel. Wisconsin
requires a negative coggins test within the current year and
Minnesota requires a negative test within one year of the
current date. Ask the show coordinator, sale barn or
shipper, ahead of time to check their current requirements.
CVS is a certified EIA
lab. On short notice, we can run the ELISA test and provide
you with the results within 24 hours. However, the cost is
more expensive. With notice, we can perform an AGID test for
results within a few days. You may pick up the completed
forms at the clinic or we can mail them to you. It is
convenient to have the blood drawn when we give your horses
their spring vaccinations. If a new test is needed, you can
haul the horse into our clinic or Dr. Winter will come to
your place. Health certificates are required to cross state
lines. Before traveling with your horse call CVS to get the
appropriate information and paper work.
